We Don’t Know What We Don’t Know

Have you noticed that when you go to see an internal medicine physician, s/he always treats you using medications? Why is that? Because internal medicine physicians are experts in diagnosing and treating with medications; and only medications. There are no other options available to the internal medicine physician unless s/he is self-taught.

How about when you visit a surgeon for a consultation? Are you surprised when the surgeon recommends surgery? What else would you expect a surgeon to recommend? Surgery is the surgeon’s area of expertise. Most surgeons know little or nothing about areas outside their specialty, say chiropractic, homeopathy, and acupuncture for example.

Think about it another way:

If the only tool in the toolbox is a hammer, then the only method available to tackle a problem is as if it were a nail, right?

So, you may be asking, what does all this have to do with health and wellness?

Keep the educational background of your healthcare providers in mind as you choose whom you will trust with your health. They only know what they know. They, like everyone else, do NOT know what they don’t know!

It will be up to you to look beyond the usual approach to find additional options for getting well and staying well. As the well-worn saying goes, it’s up to you to “think outside the box” for staying well.

Remember, nobody knows everything about everything! Remember to ask the question: What if we do nothing? Listen to the answer with the idea that someone else may well have a different answer.

Never thought about it in that light. I have an internal medicine physician. No wonder I take a handful of pills every morning. Hmmmm…may have to reevaluate some. Thanks for the insight.

There are some wonderful health care practioners who do NOT have initials after their names that include “MD” who work “miracles” with health every day. Their areas of expertise may fall into any number of other areas of high level wellness.
